James Allen McGriff, son of Jacob and Prudence McGriff, was born near West Sonora, Ohio, January 24, 1882. He was an industrious and obliging young man and lived in this community most of the time, until his marriage to Miss Anna Gregg. To this union were born two girls, Ruth and Marie, who for some time had been under the guardianship of the children's home of this County.

In January 1913, it was observed by his nearest friends that some sickness was affecting him, both mentally and physically. When the sorrows of the flood of 1913 overtook him, having lost most of his belongings, he was not able to recover the flood of sorrows thrust upon him. Consequently, with the hope of his recovery, he was taken to the Dayton State Hospital on February 11, 1916. It is believed that the best possible care was given him their; but with all of this, it became evident that he could not recover. In the early morning of November 7, 1916, his spirit was taken to God who gave it. His age was 34 years, 9 months and 13 days.

He leaves to remember him a wife, two little girls, father and mother, two brothers, a sister, half-brother and many friends.
