DOWNING/BOWER: At Salem, June 30th 1886, by Elder J. W. Webb, pastor for the Christian church, Miss Delia H. Bower, to William Henry Downing of Whiteaker. The ceremony was performed in the parlors of the Chemeketa hotel, in the presence of but a few friends. The happy couple leave this morning for their future home near Whiteaker in this county. Their many friends extend heartiest congratualations.

DEMOCRATIC LEADER HERE PASSES ON
Original Good Roads Advocate and Prominent Party Organizer Succumbs at Farm Home
William Henry Downing, prominent political figure in Marion county and for 23 months county judge, died at 5:30 o'clock, this morning, following an illness which had extended over a period of several months. For nearly a year Judge Downing had been in failing health. Death occurred at his ranch located near Shaw, and 18 miles from Salem in the Waldo Hills.
He was born in the Waldo Hills near the place of his death and had lived his entire life in Marion county. He attended Willamette university for three years. He was 67 years of age at the time of his death.
Native of County.
Judge Downing was born on May 7, 1858, and took his grade and high school education in public schools of the county. At the age of 21 he bought a farm of 80 acres adjoining the old homestead upon which he was born, later adding some 100 acres to the property. He remained on the farm until 1892, when he moved into Salem and engaged in the real estate business for about four years. For two years he conducted the Club livery stable, but disposed of it and returned to his farm in 1897, assuming charge both of his own property and that of his father.
On January 20, 1881, he married Henrietta McKinney, of which union there were born two children, Rene Bernice, who died at the age of 18 months, and a son Elmer. His first wife died early in the year 1884 and on June 30, 1886, he married Delia H. Bower. To the second union two children were born. His second wife died early in the year 1900 and in March, 1903, he married Augusta Newton, of Salem. She survives him.
Good Roads Booster.
Judge Downing early became prominent as an advocate of good roads. He was instrumental in placing the first macadam road in the Sublimity district. He was chairman of the Marion county democratic central committee during several campaigns, including the campaigns that brought Chamberlain and Pierce into the governorÂ's chair. He was appointed chairman of the state fair board by Chamberlain and county judge by Pierce. Mr. Downing was a charter member of the Oregon State Fair Association.
He is survived, in addition to his widow, by two brothers, Robert E. and Walter F. Downing, both of Salem; his sister, Mrs. Ianthe Sehlbrede of Corvallis; two sons, George P. and Elmer M. Downing, and a stepmother, Mrs. G. S. Downing of Salem.
Funeral Saturday
Judge Downing was a member of the Odd Fellows and Masonic lodges at Stayton, and of the Elks lodge at Salem. He was a member of the Christian church. Funeral services are to be held from the Rigdon mortuary at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Downing of Shaw, brother of Robert E. and Walter F. Downing of Salem and Mrs. Ianthe Sehlbrede of Corvallis, son of Mrs. G. S. Downing of Salem. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 11th at 1:30 p.m. from the Rigdon mortuary, under the auspices of Salem Lodge No. 336 B.P.O. Elks and the Rev. J. J. Evans officiating clergyman.
