John Marlin Dunn was born in 1807 in Wilkes County , GA to Thomas and Nancy Ward Dunn. He married Philotha Herrod in 1827. She was born in SC. John and Philotha traveled with his parents to Choctaw County , MS in 1836. They eventually settled in the area known as Stateland. They had nine children to survive infancy: Elizabeth born abt. 1830, Mariah born abt. 1832, W. Franklin born abt. 1835, Thomas Madison born 1838, Marlin E. born abt. 1839, Nancy born abt. 1842, Sarah born abt. 1845, Arminda born abt. 1848, and John A. born 1851. John died in 1861. His wife Philotha lived until 1886 and is buried in Shiloh Cemetery in Montgomery County . She never remarried.
