Reeve Hostetler Called By Death
Prominent Village Official Dies Suddenly in Hospital at Kitchener - Was Reeve of New Hamburg for Nearly 17 Years and Former Warden of Waterloo County

The townspeople were shocked on Tuesday morning when they learned of the sudden death of Walter R. Hostetler, reeve of the village. Mr. Hostetler passed away at 2: 30 a.m. at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, after being ill since Sunday, when he was stricken with an abdominal condition. He was removed from his home to hospital on Monday morning. The late Mr. Hostetler, who was in his 67th year, was a prominent citizen of our village and took an active part in its affairs. He was first elected to the village council in 1930 and in 1934 became reeve, which office he held continuously for the last 17 years. During that time he represented New Hamburg on the county council and in 1943 served as warden of Waterloo county. At the time of his death he was president of South Waterloo Liberal Association, a director of the Wilmot Agricultural Society and by virtue of his office, a member of the local Public Utilities Commission. He was chairman of the conservation committee of the county council for a number of years and during his long term of office in that body, served as chairman of practically every important committee in county council. The late Mr. Hostetler was a member of Zion Evangelical United Brethern Church here, and served as Sunday School superintendent and trustee of that church for many years. He owned and operated a dairy business for the past 16 years and prior to that time was engaged in farming. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Christian Hostetler, and was born on October 15th, 1883 in Wilmot township, a mile east of this village. Surviving are his wife, the former Emma Weil, a son, Dr. Howard Hostetler, London, Ont., and two daughters, (Mildred) Mrs. Walter A. Weber of Kitchener, and (Olive) Mrs. David D. Thornton, Port Dalhousie, and one brother, Norman, New Hamburg. The funeral was held Thursday afternoon with a memorial service at Zion Evangelical United Brethern Church, followed by internment in Riverside Cemetery. Rev. M. E. Reuber, pastor of the church, officiated.
