Anthropologist. Laura Bohannan was a cultural anthropologist known for her research with the Tiv of west Africa. Her famous article, "Shakespeare in the Bush," describes her attempt to tell the story of Hamlet to a group of Tiv villagers. The cultural and language barriers between the two parties result in an entirely different telling of this most famous of English plays. The article is used extensively in teaching anthropology and is included in many anthologies. As Elenore Smith Bowen, she is also famous for her widely read novel about anthropological fieldwork, Return to Laughter. She rose to prominence as editor of the American Anthropologist and is one of the world's most famous women anthropologists.
