James was the son of David M. Calhoun and Mary E. Stringer. He had served as councilman and was also mayor of South Lyon from 1942 to 1952 and was a member of the Oakland County Board of Supervisors during a long and active public life.

James died at the Hickory Convalescent HOme in Milford after having failing health for several years. He had made his home in Lyon for 56 years and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of South Lyon. He had been employed by the Pere Marquette Railroad for 18 years prior to owning and operating a coal yard in Lyon for 31 years.

From an article written upon the 50th Wedding Anniversary Celebration: Mayor and Mrs. James B. Calhoun were married on August 21, 1901, at the farm home of Mrs. Calhoun's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Furman, of Ithica, Michigan. The couple came to South Lyon following their marriage and began house keeping on Wells Street. They later moved to the house later purchased by the Furman's on East Lake Street. They bought their present home at 516 E. Lake Street in 1916.
