He married Miss Edith D. Scott at Anamosa, Iowa, Sept. 17, 1884. After one year they moved to the Black Hills, South Dakota, where they remained three years. In 1890 they came to Washington and located about twenty miles up Lake Chelan. Later they moved up to Stehekin, which has been their home until the present time.
Six children were born to the family. One died in infancy. The others are all living in the state of Washington, except the youngest son, who is in the navy.
Mr. Merritt had been having heart trouble for sixteen years. While working at the cut-off saw at the Antoine mill he was suddenly stricken and died before any assistance could be rendered. At the time of his death he was sixty-three years and eleven days old.
The funeral services were held in the M. E. church at Chelan, Wash., at 4 pm Aug. 6, 1921, Rev. O. L. Fowler, pastor of the Lakeside Congregational church officiated.
