NEGRO'S BODY FOUND NEAR RAILROAD TRACKS

Roanoke Rapids, Aug. 16, -Willie Maynard, colored man, who looked to be about 25 years old, was found dead near Roanoke Junction Monday morning by two white men who were walking down the railroad tracks toward Weldon. There was a terrible gash on the side of his face, and it is alleged that he was placed near the railroad tracks after he had been killed. The Negro was married and had several children.

Willie served our country honorably during WW I. Tragically his life was ended by dishonorable men.
In 2022 his grandaughter, with the help of John Smyre at Salisbury National Cemetery Willie's life & service was honored & recognized with this memorial headstone .
