JAMES ISLAND - Barbara Portia Sarratt Anderson died October 31, 2021 at her home on James Island, Charleston, S. C. She was 88.

Barbara's father was in the Coast Guard and as a young girl, Barbara lived in many locations, spending her teen years in Gaffney, S. C.

A graduate of Gaffney High School, she received a BA from Limestone University and an MS from University of South Carolina.

During her career, she served as a research assistant with both the S. C. Dept. of Natural Resources laboratory at Fort Johnson and the South Atlantic Fisheries Management Council in Charleston, and reference librarian at Charleston Southern University.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, William D. Anderson, Jr.; a son, Dr. William D. Anderson, III of Charleston, S. C.; a daughter, Beth Anderson of Oakland, Ca.; three granddaughters: Rebecca Durst of Summerville, S. C.; Mary Beth Anderson of USC; and Savannah Johnson of Oakland, Ca.; two grandsons: William Anderson of York,
S. C., and Robert Anderson of Clemson; a great-granddaughter, Juliette Durst of Summerville, S. C.; a sister, Dale Howard of Allen, Tx.; and a brother, Robert Sarratt of Manassas, Va..

The family will conduct a private memorial service.

Married: 10 August 1963 to William D. Anderson Jr. in Limestone Presbyterian Church, Gaffney, S. C.

Mother of two, Grandmother of five, Great grandmother of one.

Sadly, left us on October 31, 2021, at her home on James Island, Charleston, South Carolina

Because her father was a Coast Guard officer who was transferred frequently, Barbara lived in numerous places as a youth, including Staten Island, New York; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Port Angeles and Seattle, Washington; Juneau, Alaska; Port Townsend, Washington; St. Petersburg, Florida; and the Waylyn Community of what is now North Charleston.

After her father's retirement from the Coast Guard, the family moved to a farm outside Gaffney, South Carolina. Barbara graduated from high school in Gaffney, received her bachelor's degree from Limestone College in Gaffney and later obtained an MS degree in Library Science from the University of South Carolina.

Following their marriage, Barbara and Bill lived in several places, including St. Simons Island, Georgia; Gainesville, Florida; and Chattanooga, Tennessee.

She held a number of jobs, including high-school biology teacher in Brunswick, Georgia; research assistant with both the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources' laboratory at Fort Johnson and the South Atlantic Fisheries Management Council in Charleston; and, until her retirement, was a reference librarian at Charleston Southern University.

Barbara read a lot and was very knowledgeable in many areas, including medical and world affairs. She lived a long, good life, and was a very accepting person, welcoming others with her warm heart, friendliness, and genuine interest in helping them.
