Betty June (Mings) Harris, age 93, of Bethalto, Illinois, formerly of West Frankfort, Illinois, passed away peacefully at 1:50 p.m. at her home on Sunday, September 4, 2022.

She was born in West Frankfort, Illinois, on April 13, 1929, one of 11 children born to Ora Everett and Edna Maye Beatrice (Heathman) Mings.

Betty attended school in West Frankfort and was a graduate of West Frankfort High School Class of 1947.

She married Robert Carl Dorris on September 2, 1950, in West Frankfort. He passed away in 1976. Their children survive: Sharon (Dorris) Briggs and husband Ben of Spring Hill, Florida; Bruce Dorris and wife Barbara of Bethalto, Illinois; and JoDonna (Dorris) Saunders and husband Chuck of Benton, Illinois.

On October 13, 1989, Betty married James Edgar Harris of Thompsonville, Illinois. He passed away in 2007. Survivors from the Harris family are: daughter-in-law Marilyn Harris of Thompsonville, Illinois, and stepson Keith Harris.

Other survivors include many loved ones: Betty's three sisters, Berneice (Mings) Donnelly and Verla (Mings) Billingsley, both of St. Louis, Missouri, and Blondell (Mings) Kern of Sarasota, Florida; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, seven siblings, husband Robert C. Dorris, husband James E. Harris, grandson John Robert Hale, son-in-law Charles Hale, and step-son Bruce Harris.

A lifelong member of First Baptist Church in West Frankfort, Betty was part of many church activities and volunteered in many ministries. Most recently, she served at the First Baptist Church Clothing Room to help people in need. One of her greatest joys was sharing the Gospel with friends, family members and anyone she met with the hope that they would join her in walking closely with the Lord.

Genealogy research done by Betty's late sister Ruth (Mings) Goddard traced the Mings family lineage to the Menzies Clan of Scotland. Betty and James enjoyed a visit to the Menzies Clan Castle of Weem, Scotland. Planning the Mings family reunion, held every few years at a southern Illinois location and often bringing together more than 100 relatives, was a high priority for Betty.

Hosting family, friends and neighbors in her home was always a blessing for Betty. When family visited from out of town, she loved hosting them for dinner and serving her famous lasagna to all. She was often too busy to sit down because she wanted to make sure that everyone was having a good time.

Many remember Betty as a faithful Medicare billing clerk in the front office at West Frankfort's Union Hospital. She also worked at Bonifield Trucking and as a telephone operator. In later years, she helped plan the "Bonifield Girls" reunions.

For 50 years, Betty was an active member of the West Frankfort chapter of the Delta Theta Tau sorority — a philanthropic sorority with a heart of gold. What a perfect fit that was for her commitment to serving others without drawing attention to herself. She also treasured the friendships she developed with her sorority sisters of all ages.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Stone Funeral Home, 1201 East Poplar Street, West Frankfort, IL.

The visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 9th at the funeral home.

The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, September 10, 2022, at Stone Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Cash presiding.
