Frances was born on February 4, 1930 to Joseph J. Strmiska and Mary Skrhak Strmiska. She was baptized and received all her sacraments as S.S. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Granger, Texas. On July 27, 1948, she married Edward J. Steffek at S.S. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church. There were 5 children born of this union, Edward Jr., Barbara, Daniel, Rebecca and Beatrice.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph J. Strmiska and Mary Skrhak Strmiska and ex-husband Edward J. Steffek Sr., grandson, Christopher Kelley, 3 brothers – Daniel Strmiska, George Strmiska, and Frank Strmiska, infant sister Bernice Strmiska and 2 infant brothers.

She is survived by her children, Edward Steffek, Jr. and wife Becky of Austin, Barbara Kelley and husband Jack of Round Rock, Daniel Steffek and wife Donna of Taylor, Rebecca Meyer and husband Gary of Elgin and Beatrice Totedo and husband Dave of Austin, grandchildren Sandra Davis and husband Greg and daughter Katherine, Michele Kelley and children Makenzie and Nate, Courtney Hill and husband Thomas and daughter Peyton and son Joshua, Matthew Steffek and wife Meaghan and sons Winston and Henry and daughters Annalisa and Ann Marie , Dawn Dickens and husband Michael and son Kaden and daughter Addison, Justin Steffek and wife Amanda and son Samuel, Derrick Steffek and wife Cristina and daughter Gracelyn and son Jackson, Travis Meyer, Kristen Meyer and husband Nathan and daughter Lily and Michael Totedo.

She is also survived by brother Clement Strmiska and wife Nancy of Granger, , sisters Georgie Drozd and husband Thomas (deceased) of Temple and Geraldine Schneider and husband Marvin (deceased) of Bryan and numerous nieces and nephews.

As a young girl Frances worked on her parent’s farm. Later she was employed by Kerr-Ban Manufacturing Co., Down Town Cafeteria and Sweet Briar Nursing Home and SPJST Nursing Home in Taylor. She moved to Elgin in 1977 and was self-employed as owner/operator of B&F Grocery in Elgin and Duck-In Drive Inn in Taylor. In later years, she continued to work for the Elgin ISD and Meyer’s Elgin Smokehouse. We all admired her for her hard work ethic, something that she instilled in her children from early on.

Frances loved and was proud of her Czech heritage and loved teaching her children and grandchildren to understand her when she spoke the Czech language. She loved Czech music and as a young lady, she played the fiddle in her father’s band. She played by ear for she did not read music.

Frances was a devout Catholic and was deeply committed to her faith and the Catholic Church. She sent all 5 children to St. Mary’s Catholic School in Taylor, giving them solid groundwork and sacrificing much to lay a foundation for future generations. She was a strict but loving mother and provided a great example for her children who never doubted that they were the most important things in her life.

“Mimi” was the name given to her by her first grandchild and eventually everyone called her “Mimi”. She was the strongest woman any of us has ever known and she held our family together in very hard times, setting the standard in our family. From Mimi, all of us received our drive, ambition and fire! She showed us THE LOVE FOR FAMILY with hugs, kisses and kind words.

Each of the grandchildren has their own special bond with their “Mimi”. She was proud of every achievement from the smallest Crayola drawing to their Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. Mimi filled our lives with joy and our hearts with love. Her advice and encouragement will be greatly missed.

May you rest in peace and shine your light down on us.
