Andrew joined the 3rd Iowa Infantry (Co H) on 31 May, 1861 and served the full 3-year term. He and his company were responsible for guarding the Locust Creek Bridge on the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad in 1861. He then reenlisted in the 3rd IA Veteran Inf, which was much depleted from disease and battlefield losses. Very quickly the Battle of Atlanta decimated the already small unit, which was then consolidated into the 2nd Iowa Infantry, in which he served to the end of the war.

The 3rd Iowa has a proud heritage and fought in a number of important battles: Battle of Blue Mills Landing, Shiloh, Corinth, Hatchie Bridge, Siege of Vicksburg, Jackson MS, Atlanta and with General Sherman on his famous "March to the Sea." He was discharged at Louisville, Kentucky on July 12, 1865.

Andrew is mentioned very briefly a few times in a diary of one of his fellow soldiers.

He was my great, great grandmother's brother.
