She accepted Christ at an early age under the teaching of her grandfather, Rev. James A. Fisher, Sr. She was active in the youth choir and other youth groups.

Etta Mae received her education in Alabama, Tennessee, and West Virginia. She graduated from C.H.R.V. School of Nursing in Roanoke, Virginia, where she worked until her health deteriorated. Upon moving to Roanoke, she became a member of Morning Star Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Thomas E. Crews. She directed the gospel choir, the senior choir and the youth choir. She enjoyed singing and playing the piano. At Morning Star, she also worked with the Pastor's Aid, the Missionary Circle or wherever she was needed. After Rev. Crews' death, she served under the leadership of Rev. Dr. L.A. Lewis where she led the music department for 20 years.

Later, she married Thomas W. Jones and joined Melrose Seventh Day Adventist Church where her husband was a member. Under the leadership of Elder Gilbert A. Anderson, she directed the church choir and Gospel Chorus and was a Sabbath school teacher, Vacation Bible school teacher and the secretary for the Dorcas Society for five years. During her life, she volunteered at Burrell Home for Adults, Avante Nursing Home and the VA Hospital in Salem, Virginia. She was a member of the VFW Post 1444 Women's Auxiliary. She was also a pianist for Macedonia Baptist Church, Big Hill Baptist Church, and St. John A.M.E. Church. Her main works were to put Jesus first.
