George Melvin Akins Sr., 83, passed from this life on Saturday, August 27, 2022. He was the beloved husband of Deanna T. (Tracy) Akins and they were married on May 27, 1983, celebrating 39 years of marriage this year. Born in York, he was the son of the late George W. and M. Edna (Jones) Akins. George served in the U.S. Marine Corps for over four years from Oct. '59 to Oct. '63 and was proud that he served his country without being drafted. He worked at Columbia Forest Products in New Freedom for over 30 years. He then worked as a York Deputy Sheriff for almost 7 years, retiring in 2006. He was a member of the VFW Post 556 and the American Legion Post 127 - Charles E. Williams, both of York. George was a wonderful man and will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Surviving in addition to his wife is a son, George M. (Patty) Akins Jr.; 2 stepchildren, Eric (Kristin) Thompson and R. Aaron (Erica) Thompson; 1 grandchild, Taylor (Brendon) McWilliams; 8 step grandchildren; 1 great grandchild, Rey Ann; 4 step great grandchildren; a niece, Natalie L. Akins; and numerous other relatives. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Donald and Marvin Akins. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a viewing from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, September 1, at Hartenstein Funeral & Cremation Care, Inc., 19 S. Main St., Stewartstown, PA 17363 or from 10-11 a.m., Friday, September 2. There will be a funeral service on Friday, September 2, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
