Rites Thursday for Jake Smith
Funeral rites were held at the First Presbyterian church at 2 p.m. Thursday for Jake Smith, 65, longtime Durant businessman, who died in a local hospital Tuesday night after an extended illness [amyotrophic lateral sclerosis].
Services were conducted by Rev. John T. Mueller, and burial was under the direction of Holmes Funeral Home in Highland cemetery.
Active pallbearers were John Props, Lonnie Dill, Charles Allen, James H. Penny, Bill Foote and J. Roy Badger. Honorary palbearers were members of boy scout troop 614 and elders and deacons of the First Presbyterian church.
A native of Amity, Ark., Mr. Smith was born January 17, 1895. He was married to Miss Mary Rankin in Durant August 26, 1923 and he had operated a shoe repair shop in Durant from 1931 to 1959 when he sold his business and retired because of illness. [He had also served as a bank officer, owned a doughnut shop and various other jobs.]
He was a navy veteran of World War I and was a member of the First Presbyterian church, the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors included his wife, of home address, 1203 N. Washington; one son, Rankin Smith, Baytown, Texas; two daughters, Mrs. Priscilla Verrett, Texas City, Texas; and Mrs. Carolyn Cockrill, La Marque, Texas; one brother, E. T. Smith, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a half brother, Woody Smith, Dallas; two sisters, Mrs. Fannie Herring, Durant; and Mrs. Nora Deal, Heber Springs, Ark.; and nine grandchildren.
