Ambrose Herman was the son of John Herman and Mary Rudie Herman.

He married Bernice Mary Schlangen on May 31, 1948, in St. Cloud, Minnesota. She survives.

During his 35 months of service in World War II, he participated in the invasions of North Africa, Sicily and Southern France, serving as an infantryman, then as a crew chief and flight engineer in the Air Force. He received three battle stars and presidential citations while in service.
