Obituary
John William Merritt was born January 7, 1885, in Mendon, Illinois, the child of Henry Garrett and Jenny Lynn Raines Merritt. He passed away January 17, 1980. He married Ida Estella Faulk, March 19, 1906, in Brock, Missouri. To this union six children were born. Those surviving are John M. Merritt, Lt. Col., of Merritt Island, Florida; Mrs. Robert Lee, of Lynwood, California, Mrs. Alva Magill of Bloomfield, Iowa, and Mrs. Lynn Kleyla, of Alexandria, Virginia. Those preceding him in death were Robert Arden and May Belle Wenstrom, also his wife, Stella in 1949. In 1952 John married Lillie Stevenson, who survives. Also surviving are one step-daughter, Marie Hanson, twelve grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, ten step-great-grandchildren, five step-great-great-grandchildren, and two sisters Willa Ferree of Orange, California, and Mrs. Clyde Kerr (Dorothy) of Cantril, Iowa. John farmed most of his life in Scotland County, Missouri, and Van Buren County, Iowa, retiring to Memphis, in 1943. Funeral services were conducted by the Payne-Gerth Funeral Home, Sunday, January 20, 1980, at 1:30 p.m. in their Memphis Chapel. The Rev. Kenneth Campbell officiated. Burial was in the Brock Cemetery, Scotland County, Missouri. Organist was Mrs. Ann Luther. Soloist was Mr. Kenneth Campbell.
