Killed in a street rail accident

A sad and terrible accident occurred yesterday morning, which resulted in the death of Mr. J. M. Hibbs, an old and well known citizen of this city. It seems that Mr. Hibbs attempted to board a moving street car on Fifth street, between Washington and Jefferson, and as the car was already overcrowded he did not succeed in getting a good hold. In the jam, he was in some way pushed off and rolled under the car. The car was not moving very fast, but with the great load, the car could not be stopped before it had passed completely over him. He was picked up and carried to the sidewalk where he expired in a few minutes. Dr. Matthew arrived just previous to his death, but medical aid was of no avail. The conductor and driver both say that at the time of the accident the team was going at a slow trot, and that owing to the crowded condition of the car they were unable to see him when he fell.

The deceased leaves a wife and eight children to mourn the loss of a loving husband and father. The children are Mrs. Addie Woods of Peoria, Mrs. James F. McNeal of Oskaloosa, Ia., Mrs. VanDeventer of northern Michigan, Mrs. Louis Lehman, Mrs. Barlow, Miss Lou, and Willie Hibbs of this city, and G. A. Hibbs who resides in the west.
