William Henry Norris was born April 15, 1839 at Woodgrove Furnace, Virginia (Now WV) which is near Morgantown, WV today in Monongalia County. His parents were Joseph and Susan Norris. William was the third of a family of ten children. Sometime after 1839, the family moved to Star Furnace, Kentucky. William married Elizabeth Ann Jaynes there on July 6, 1862. Sometime after this, they moved to Shawnee, Ohio. William owned a large house on Walnut St in Shawnee. They were the parents of 12 children; eight sons and four daughters: Solomon, John, William, Howard C., Elmer, Willard, James A., Charles, Pearl, Mabel, Cora and Minnie. William was a coal miner all his life and practiced the Methodist faith. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Shawnee, Ohio. It was said that William was the tallest man in Shawnee, Ohio they would have William dress up as Uncle Sam for the parade.
