Armitage was the son of Charles Hughes and Sarah Schooley. He served as a First Class Fireman on the U.S.S. Penguin in the U.S. Navy during the Civil War.
He married Elizabeth G. Peppit, with whom he had 6 children.

HUGHES--Entered into rest, in this city on the 30th inst., Armitage D Hughes. The relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral from his late residence, No 932 Carteret Avenue, on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment at Riverview Cemetery.
