Hazel M (née Wright) Donohue was born on Tuesday, December 1, 1903, in Choptank MD, to Edward Orland and Nettie Ray (née Price) Wright. She was the second born of five children. After her mother died in 1912, she was adopted and raised by Dr John Raymond and Caroline Frances (née Jarrell) Downes, in Preston MD.
Hazel was a 1923 graduate of Maryland State Normal School (now Towson State University) in Towson MD. In 1924, Dr Downes and his family relocated to Newark, in northern Delaware. They lived at 132 West Main Street, in Newark, where Hazel eventually met her future husband.
On November 24, 1934, Hazel married Mark Neary Donohue of Wilmington DE, in Newark DE.
Hazel taught school in Maryland and was supervisor of schools for Prince Georges County, in Maryland. After she moved to New Jersey, she taught school in Maplewood.
Zilly lived in Maplewood and Summit before moving to Chatham Township in 1978. In 1992, she moved to the Stewartsville section of Greenwich Township.
Hazel died at home on Thursday, April 1, 1993, in Stewartsville NJ. She was 89 years old.
In addition to her parents and adoptive parents, Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Mark; her son, Mark Jr, winner of the 1972 Indianapolis 500 and the 1973 Can-Am; her brothers, Theodore Noble Wright and Orland Ray Wright; her sisters, Audrey Lucille Wright and Edith Margaret (née Wright) Mason; and her adoptive brother, Captain (USN ret) Robert Nobel Downes. She is survived by her two daughters, Nancy of Brooklyn NY and Mary Ellen Wulff of Stewartsville; and her four grandchildren.
