Donald L. Anderson, 73
Professor emeritus at UMass
Donald L. Anderson of Wilmot, N.H, a professor emeritus at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, died Friday at his home after a long battle with cancer. He was 73.
Mr. Anderson was born in Cambridge, attended school in Cambridge, attended school in Wellesley, and graduated from Stoneham High School in 1943. He served in the US Navy in the Pacific during World War II.
He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and a master's and doctorate from the University of Connecticut. At UMass-Amherst, he taught and conducted research in the Veterinary and Animal Science Department for 32 years.
Mr. Anderson was a member of the honorary societies Sigma Xi and Phi Kappa Phi. He was also a member of the American Institute of Nutrition, American Society of Nutritional Sciences, the World's Poultry Science Association, and the American Societies for Experimental Biology.
After his retirement in 1988, Mr. Anderson moved to Wilmot, N.H., where he continued to work as a freelance consultant in animal nutrition. He enjoyed hunting, fly fishing and fly tying, and was an accomplished cabinetmaker and gardener.
He leaves his wife, Shirley (Caldwell); a daughter, Daryl A Mooney of Sterling; two sons, Brett C. of Fairfield, Iowa, and D. Gary of Amherst; and three grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. in Lakeside Cemetery in Newbury, N.H.
