ESCONDIDO - Roland William Renner, 92, died Friday, June 30, 2006, after a brief illness.

Born April 15, 1914, he lived in Escondido since 1992. In 1946, he went to Tanzania in East Africa, under the sponsorship of Augustana Lutheran Mission. He spent 20 years in Africa, teaching farming methods in the African school system and leading the building of the Iambi Leprosarium.

He returned to the United States and completed his studies in ornamental horticulture. He taught at Madison High School in San Diego until 1979. He was a member of the House of Prayer Church and traveled extensively.

Mr. Renner was preceded in death by his first wife, Marjorie, in 1969; parents Gustav and Elsie Renner; brother Alston; and sister, Lila.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Eleanor Renner of Escondido; sister Isis Westling; sons and daughters-in-law Irvin and Dona, William and Marilyn, Paul and Sandy, and Mark and Janice; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at Redwood Terrace Health Center Pavilion on July 8.

A private burial was held at El Camino Memorial Park.
