Alvin was a Native Texan and a bachelor. He was born in Kleberg County, Texas, the son of an "agricultural specialist and technician". He spent his childhood in Kleberg and Nueces Counties among the cotton and sorghum fields. Alvin and his family moved to Fort Worth in the early 1960s where he lived the rest of his life.
Alvin's primary occupation was with the former Sammons Cable Company as a dispatch operator. He spent his spare time engaging in different hobbies over the years. In his youth, he was an avid comic book and baseball card collector, and his collections would have made him a millionaire had his mother and aunt not thrown his collections away. He was an umpire for softball and baseball recreational leagues of Fort Worth in the 1970s and early 1980s. In the late 1980s-1990s, he was a parakeet breeder and his birds won many awards in various bird shows across Texas.
Alvin was a survivor. He survived the poverty of his youth, a near death experience due to a hernia, breast cancer, and a broken hip.
Alvin leaves behind his mother, Mrs. Maria Sanchez Guerra Montalvo; eight siblings: four sisters, Candie and her family of Killeen, Texas, Martha and her family of Copperas Cove, Texas, "Liz" and her family of Fort Worth, and Jennifer of Fort Worth; four brothers: Natividad "Steve" and his family of Arkansas, Gilbert Sr. and his family of Fort Worth and Houston, Nick Jr. and his family of Fort Worth, and David and his family of Nolanville, Texas; and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Mr. Nicolas Trevino Guerra; Aunt Mrs. Mary Brasher; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fabian Sanchez and Mr. and Mrs. Eutimio Guerra.
