BLACK RIVER FALLS, Wis. — Darlene K. Walter, age 66, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, in Black River Memorial Hospital.

Darlene Karen Johnson was born on Feb 21, 1942, in Black River Falls to Earl J. and Helen (Burge) Johnson. She was raised in the town of Irving, Jackson County.

Darlene married Ronald Walter on Feb. 11, 1961, at the Little Norway Lutheran Church, rural Black River Falls. The couple has lived in the Black River Falls area all of their married lives.

She was a member of the Little Norway Lutheran Church where she helped with various church activities and taught Bible School. She had also been active with 4-H and helped with the Jackson County Fair "Kiddie Barn" in the 1970s. She enjoyed flowers and sewing.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald; a son, Bruce (Cindy) Walter of Humbird; three daughters, Diane Larson of Augusta, Debbie (Donald) Olson of Black River Falls and Teresa (Dale) Shawback of Manchester, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Earl (Mary) Johnson and Clifford (Darlene) Johnson both of Black River Falls; three sisters, Verna (Ted) Edie of Black River Falls and Evelyn (Raymond) Stoker both of Black River Falls, and Hazel (Al) Peterson of The Colony, Texas; a sister-in-law, Sharon Johnson of Black River Falls; and nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Helen Johnson; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Floyd and Ferne Walter; a sister, Palma Hampel; a brother, Carl Johnson; a sister-in-law, Charlotte Johnson; a brother-in-law, Donn Hampel; a son-in-law, Stephen Larson; and two nephews, Joey Edie and Timothy Edie.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, 2008, at the Little Norway Lutheran Church with burial in the church cemetery, rural Black River Falls. Pastor Calvin Thoreson officiated.

Family and friends were invited for visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Buswell Funeral Home and at the church on Friday from 1 p.m. until services.

Memorials may be given to the Little Norway Lutheran Church.
