Jesus C. Benavides, 101, was called by the Lord on January 27, 2008. He was born August 14, 1906 in Cerralvo Nuevo Leon to Victoria Benavides and Don. Flaviano Benavides. He was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

He served his country in the United States Army during WWII. He married Manuela Chavez in 1946. He was a long time resident of Mathis, Texas where he worked for the city of Mathis and raised his family of seven children.

His retirement years were mostly spent in Corpus Christi at Casa De Oro Retirement Center where everyone knew him as "Papa". He was active at Lindale Senior Citizens and volunteered his services there. He was also very involved in his children's lives. He liked keeping up with sports and current events, and was an avid reader. He was a great friend to all who knew him. He had a wonderful happy spirit that touched many lives. He lived a long, healthy, simple enriched life. He loved God, family and others. He took tremendous pride in his family and friends. He will be dearly missed by all who loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and one grandson. Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Manuela Chavez Benavides; one sister Enriqueta Trejo; his children Jessie Benavides and wife Nora, Manuela Carter and husband Charles, Victoria Salinas and husband Balde, Irma Villarreal and husband Jessie, Mary Ella Paiz and husband Ray, Joe Benavides and wife Sylvia, and John Benavides and wife Annette. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren who were so near and dear to his heart.

Visitation and rosary held Jan.30 at Cage-Mills Funeral Directors. A mass was celebrated on Jan. 31 at St Pius X Catholic Church. Burial followed at Descanso Eterno in Mathis, Texas.
