The Arthur Middletown was hit by two torpedos from German submarine U-73 and exploed within 17 minutes off the coast of Casablanca during the war.

" 78 " out of the 81 on board lost their lives.

Augustus was declared "Missing In Action" in this sinking during the war.

He was awarded the Mariner's Combat Bar with a Star.

Husband of Katherine Florence ( Shemanski ) Smith ( 1890 - 1958 ) and they had 2 children together.
