Joseph M. McKee Sr., 72, of the 900 block of Johnstown Road, went to be with the Lord and his family in heaven Jan. 25, 2008. Born in Bunlevel, N.C., he was the son of the late Charles P. McKee Sr. and Helen S. McKee and was predeceased by his brother, Edwin; his sister, Mamie; a niece, Theresa; and his best friend and brother-in-law, Gilbert. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, son, brother and friend. Joseph was a graduate of Cradock High School and later was honored to receive his bachelor's in education and a master's in school administration from the College of William and Mary. He was an educator in the Chesapeake Public Schools for 34 years and retired from Rena B. Wright Primary School. He was a member of Hickory United Methodist Church, Hickory Ruritan Club and the Boy Scouts of America. Survivors include his loving wife of 51 years, Grace J. McKee; three grown children, Joseph M. McKee Jr. and fiancee Jeanne, Susan K. McKee and Michael C. McKee Sr. and wife Nicole; three grandchildren, Michael Jr., Charles "C.J." and Tyler; a beloved granddog, Goldie; brothers, Charles Jr. and wife Mary, Philip and wife Virginia, James and wife Pat; sisters, Mildred, Christine and Helen; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake. The Rev. Tom Mercer will officiate. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The viewing will begin Monday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Officer Down Fund for Detective Jarrod Shivers or the Saving Grace Memorial Fund for SST.
