Marcus, a servant of God and friend to many, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 8, 2022, at the age of 89 from natural causes.

Marcus is preceded in death by his parents Dr. Marcus Evans Mullings Sr. and Mrs. Dixie Hines Mullings, and brothers Lynn Wayne Mullings, Raymond Norman Mullings, and Gunter Klein Mullings.

Marcus was born on January 31, 1933, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and later moved with his family to Abilene, TX, where they made a home at 1401 Cedar Crest Lane. Marcus majored in biblical studies at ACU. Afterward, he served his country as a sharpshooter in the Army. Upon returning home to Abilene, Marcus spent much time on campus. He loved ACU and was deeply attached to it. He was a lifelong learner, spending much time at the library, and auditing many courses. Marcus also enjoyed attending ACU sporting and other events on campus.

After returning to Abilene, Marcus focused on the things he loved. He worked to spread the gospel in Abilene and went on mission trips to Mexico. He also worked with Boy Scouts, spending many evenings teaching young men about the outdoors. Early on he was a Scoutmaster for Troop 12, and later would regularly volunteer with Troop 201. Marcus was a naturalist; he loved the outdoors and knew many trails worth hiking. He was extremely knowledgeable about plants and birds. He could identify numerous birds by their call, and even helped to organize an annual bird count. One of Marcus' favorite things in nature was the Monarch butterfly migration, which he faithfully observed. He was always glad to share articles about the migration with anyone who was interested.

Marcus loved the Lord, and it was common to see him reading his Bible or a book on theology or church history. He was a longtime member of the University Church of Christ and was also a regular attender of Bar Church for the last few years. He was a member of many small groups and especially loved spending time each Thursday at McDonald's with a group of longtime friends. He loved his fellow man and was one of the most selfless and generous people in Abilene. Although he lived on a fixed government income, he frequently and freely shared what he had with others, even if it meant that he went without.

Marcus cared deeply for the home he grew up in, which was built by his father and one of the few homes in Abilene with a basement. He wanted to maintain it and his father's legacy. Marcus' lifelong dream was to refurbish the property for use as housing for students or anyone else who needed a place to stay. He saw this as a missional opportunity to make a difference in peoples' lives by telling them about Jesus.

Many who did not personally know Marcus would still recognize him as a local figure riding his bicycle everywhere he went. Marcus loved to cycle, even into his late eighties and on the occasional snowy day! The sight of him riding around campus will be especially missed by the ACU community.

Funeral services are scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on March 25, 2022, at University Church of Christ in Abilene located at 733 E North 16th St, Abilene, TX 79601, under the direction of Girdner Funeral Home, Abilene.
