He was born on May 16, 1936, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Fred and Stella (Pebberton) Knapp.
Surviving are his sons William Knapp Jr. of Altoona, Iowa, Scott Knapp of Zearing, Iowa, and James "Timmy" Knapp of San Fransisco, California; sister Ruby Knapp Drexler of Central City, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wives Gloria McManigle Knapp and Connie Borton Knapp; infant daughter; sister; and seven brothers.
