Mary E. Barondeau, 93, of Aberdeen, SD, formally of Onaka passed away Wednesday, July 20, 2022, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 A.M., Monday, July 25, 2022, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Aberdeen. Fr. Mitchell McLaughlin and Fr. David Janes

Burial will be 1:00 P.M. Monday at the Onaka Cemetery.

Visitation will be 4-5 p.m., Sunday, at the mortuary. Visitation continues one hour before Mass at the church.

Mary Elizabeth Engel was born September 12, 1928, on a farm north of Gettysburg (Potter County), South Dakota to John and Frances (Clark) Engel.

She started school in Potter County, then at St. Anthony's Parochial School in Hoven, and graduated from Hoven High School in 1947. She then attended summer school at Northern State Teacher's College in Aberdeen. She taught for two years in rural schools in Faulk and Potter Counties.

In the fall of 1948, she met Celestine Barondeau of Onaka, South Dakota. They were married on September 12, 1949, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Hoven, South Dakota. They made their home, raised four children, and continued to farm west of Onaka until 2012 when they moved to Aberdeen to Primrose Assisted Living. After Celestine's passing on February 21, 2014, Mary moved to Mother Joseph Manor in February 2015, where she resided until her passing

Mary was active in Christian Mother's Altar Society as their secretary for 12 years, a CCD teacher for 24 years, and a member of the St John Baptist Catholic Church in Onaka.

She was an active member of the community, serving on the school board for one year, acted as a substitute teacher for the Onaka School district and a teacher's aide from 1970 – 1978. Mary loved gardening, scrapbooking and reading.

Survivors include sons Roger (Penny) Barondeau of Aberdeen, Ronald (Deb) Barondeau of Mitchell, daughter Janet Barondeau of Aberdeen, one sister, Theresa Kirby of Gettysburg, SD, two brothers, Anthony Engel of Fort Washington, MD and Edward (Grace) Engel of Phoenix, AZ, sisters in law Crystal Engel of Lewisville, TX, Rhea Barondeau of Faulkton, four grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Celestine of 65 years, parents John & Frances Engel, son David Barondeau, brothers; Vincent Engel, Francis Engel, Lawrence Engel and Patrick Engel, one sister, Veronica Albrecht and one grandson John Barondeau.
