Original Name was: Irene Mary Steiner
Her father, as well as her maternal great grandfather, was Jewish.
Some of Irene's better known work in movies were Ben-Hur, The Haunting, Flipper's New Adventure, Doctor Zhivago and Goodbye, Mr. Chips; just to name a few.
Her brothers were Leslie Howard, Memorial ID: 3594 and Arthur Howard, Memorial ID: 13699269.

*Irene Howard, who has died aged 78, was a member of a notable stage family with brothers Leslie and Arthur and nephew Alan Howard. She was one of the best-known film casting directors in the world.
She began her career on the stage, appearing in the 1930s in her brother Leslie's production of "Berkeley Square", both in the West End and on Broadway, before running a company of English players in Paris.
As head casting director of Two Cities Films, she was largely responsible for wartime pictures such as "The Lamp Still Burns", "The Gentle Sex", "In Which We Serve", "The Way Ahead" and "The Way to the Stars".
She worked at Denham and Pinewood on such films as "Henry V", "Beware of Pity" and "Odd Man Out" before being appointed head of casting for both MGM British and Ealing films.
Her later credits included "Ivanhoe", "Man in the Sky", "The Shiralee", "Quo Vadis", "Knights of the Round Table", "Beau Brummel", "Bowani Junction" and "The Barretts of Wimpole Street".
