The Angel of Death

Nels Sorby

After a lingering illness covering a period of several months, Nels Sorby passed away at his home in this city last Friday afternoon, August 1, 1919 at 2:30. All that a loving wife, relatives and friends could do to alleviate his suffering was administered, but to no avail. He gradually grew weaker until the end.
Nels Sorby was born in Christiana, Norway, July 31, 1858. When twelve years of age he came to this country, settling in Harmony, Filmore county, Minnesota. When he was twenty-one he came to Gary and since that time has resided here. He was married to Miss Hannah Jesme August 30, 1884, and to this union one child was born, a son, John.
For a number of years Mr. Sorby has been engaged in farming, and with marked success. Several years ago he retired from active work and moved to this city. When a young man he was confirmed in the Lutheran church. He was a member of Unity Lodge, No. 18, Independent Order of Odd-fellows of Gary, and was held in high esteem by the brethren of that order.
He leaves to mourn his loss, a wife, one son, John, two grandchildren, three brothers and two sisters, Carl Sorby of Madison, Ole Sorby of Gary, John Sorby of Burr, Mrs. Oscar Dorr of St. Paul, Mrs. H Halstenson of Burr, besides many other relatives and a host of friends. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Methodist church. Rev. Douglas officiating and his remarks brought comfort and peace to the hearts of the bereaved ones. The remains were laid to rest in Grand View cemetery. A very large congregation attended the services, and attested by their presence the esteem in which Mr. Sorby was held. The lodge of Odd Fellows attended in a body, and at the grave their solemn and impressive burial ceremony was given.

CARD OF THANKS
Mrs. Sorby and son wish to sincerely thank all those who so kindly aided them in the trouble. And especially do they wish to thank the minister for his kindly words of comfort, and the choir for their singing, and those who furnished the beautiful flowers, and the members of the Odd Fellow lodge, who so kindly aided them during the illness and death of their beloved husband and father.
