Daily News, Batavia NY, Wednesday Evening, July 29, 1942:
Harry W. Gumaer, 48, formerly of Oakfield and Genesee County American Legion commander in 1933, died suddenly of a heart attack at his home at 11:30 yesterday morning, July 28, 1942. Mr. Gumaer was manager of the Warsaw branch of Gordon Motor Parts, Inc. Mr. Gumaer was born in Kingston on June 7, 1894, the son of Lawrence and the late Anna Wooster Gumaer. He went to Oakfield after the World War and there married Gladys Root on September 6, 1922. For a time, Mr. Gumaer operated a garage at Oakfield and served 2 years as justice of the peace. He was also once a candidate for supervisor from Oakfield. The family moved to Warsaw nearly 8 years ago. When Mr. Gumaer was chosen Genesee County commander of the American Legion, he was connected with Hiram G. Luhman Post at Oakfield. He was a member of Batavia Lodge, No. 475, F. & A.M., Warsaw Presbyterian Church, Wyoming Chapter, R.A.M., of Warsaw and Walter Klein Post, American Legion, of Warsaw. Besides his wife and Father, Mr. Gumaer is survived by a son, Harry W., Jr.; a daughter, Sally E., both of Warsaw; 4 brothers, Arthur J. of Batavia, Fred of Tulsa, Okla., Peter of Poughkeepsie, Robert of Aliquippa, Pa.; 2 sisters, Mrs. George Spear of Rochester and Miss Margaret Gumaer of Poughkeepsie. Weeks Funeral Home handled arrangements with Rev. James C. Fahl, pastor of the Presbyterian Church officiating. Military Services at the grave in Warsaw Cemetery.
