Lycurgus "Curg" McCoy

Death followed an illness of nearly 10 years. He, for more than 70 years lived in and near Moravia. He was critically ill two weeks and all that medical aid could do was done. Curg was born in Moravia, Dec. 31, 1860; was a son of Harvey and Louisa McCoy, passed away at the Albia Hospital March 5, 1935 at the age of 74 years, two months and 5 days. Curg McCoy will be remembered as one of our most excellent citizens and was known to almost every person in Monroe and Appanoose counties, where he spent all his life. He was known to be a clean, honest and upright citizen. The body was laid to rest in the Blakesburg Cemetery, March 7, 1935.

Curg McCoy was a firm believer of God's word, he appreciated the privileges of hearing it proclaimed, he admired an honest man or woman. The last words he spoke while his daughter, Clella was holding his hand was "tell mamma not to worry, for I am alright," and he passed on. In 1890 he engaged in the livery business in the town of Foster, where he remained until the year 1896, when he moved to Eddyville and bought the Epperson livery, which he conducted about two years, returning to the home place near Brompton where he spent the remainder of his days.

He married Mrs. Jane Abernathy Baird in the year 1898. To this union was born two children, Clella, wife of V. J. Anderson of Des Moines and Max H. L. McCoy at home. He was the youngest of eight children, all preceding him in death excepting one brother, Ike McCoy of Oklahoma.

It was in the town of Moravia that he was made a Mason, which he held very sacred. When road conditions were bad he would walk Moravia to attend lodge, never wanting to be absent. He withdrew his membership from the Moravian Lodge by request from friends at Blakesburg so that they might have sufficient number to organize a lodge in that city. Old Antiquity at Moravia was held very dear to him, yet he loved the Waveland boys at Blakesburg and had many good times with them all.

The funeral was conducted Mar 7th, in the U.B. Church in Moravia by the Rev. Frank Smith, which indeed was very fitting. Lorena Albert sang beautifully "My Faith Looks Up to Thee," "Have Thine Own Way, Lord," and "My Jesus I love You," with Mrs. Geo. Winsler at the piano. Masonic services at the closing and also at the grave.
