On the morning of Thursday, September 22, 2005, Martin H. Wilcox of Canton, passed away quietly at his residence. He was 89 years of age. Born December 6, 1915 in Stanley, Ontario County, New York, he was one of seven sons in the family of Ralph and Bertha May (Sellard) Wilcox. During his youth the family moved to Canton, and Martin graduated Canton High School with the Class of 1934. He worked for a while for the American-LaFrance Co. in Elmira, then answered our country's call to arms by serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, Martin courted Miss Elsie Scriven, and on June 6, 1947 they were wed. They raised two daughters and shared fifty-eight years together. Martin was employed for nearly thirty years as a pressman for Moore Business Forms in Elmira. He was a life member of the Roaring Run Memorial V.F.W. post in Gillett, the American legion post at Morris Run, and attended the Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ) in Canton. In recent years Martin and Elsie resided at McCallum Manor in Canton, where he was active in the various social functions for as long as his health would permit. Martin had been an avid hunter, fisherman and camper, both locally and in Canada. He enjoyed playing guitar and harmonica, and in the past had been very proficient at wood working. He was well known for his keen sense of humor, as well as his penchant for helping others. Most of all, he enjoyed visiting with family and friends. His jovial nature and warm, friendly smile will forever be remembered by all who knew him. Martin is survived by his wife, Elsie, at home; daughters, Cynthia (and Richard) Dean of Troy, and Patricia Handley of Buffalo, NY; granddaughters, Katherine and Joan; grandson, Martin; great-grandson, Nathaniel; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his six brothers, Arnold, William, Sellard, Emerson, Clarence and Laurence Wilcox. Visitation will be Wednesday, September 28th, from noon until 1 p.m. at Morse & Kleese Funeral Home, Inc., 40 N. Center Street, Canton. Services will follow at 1 p.m., with close family friend, Mr. Richard Pratt, officiating. Interment will be private. The family will provide the flowers, and suggest that memorials in Martin's name be directed to Memorial Hospital Hospice Services, One Hospital Blvd., Towanda, PA 18848.
