Fulton- George Beard was born in St. Lawrence county, N. Y., March 19, 1822, and died October 12, 1897, aged 75 years 6 months 23 days. His funeral was held at the Wakeshma Baptist church, the pastor officiating. He moved to Wakeshma September 10, 1844j, and was married to Lucinda Studling September, 1840. To them were born eight children, three of them having passed on before him. John P. Beard died August 17, 1854; Persis Beard August 20, 1854i; Mrs. Graham died January 18, 1897. His wife passed away March 5, 1877. Mr. Beard came into this part of the country before Wakeshma as a township was born. His goods were shipped to Detroit and with his teams he brought them to the place he decided to plant his home. One of his brothers was the first white child born in Wakeshma. Mr. Beard was one of the first twelve voters in the township. Of these only two remain on the field of action. When he came to his present home it was a wilderness and by perseverance and hard work he cut away the wilderness and provided a home for himself and family. He, with the other pioneers, did well their part in cutting down other trees and planting "Liberty tree " in the forest of Michigan. They came from the east, bidding farewell to old homes and associations with heavy, but stout and ambitious hearts, they came as the "star of the empire was taking its western course," settling here and there in rough and isolated huts, to subdue the wilderness and got it ready for advanced civilization. His last illness was sudden, and he passed away surrounded by his children, who did all that, loving hands could do for his comfort. He leaves behind him four brothers and three sisters, five children, Valorous Beard, Zack Beard, Mrs. Kate Mussleman, Mrs. Nora Wing and Dexter Beard.
