Clara Woodall Scouten, age 89 of Four Oaks, a loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed away, August 29, 2013 in Spring Arbor of Durham. Born in Johnston County April 9, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Garland and Minnie Thompson Woodall. Mrs. Scouten was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn B. Scouten and two brothers, Elton Woodall and George Woodall, Sr. and two sisters, Mildred Woodall Long and Beulah Woodall Gudac. Clara was a graduate of Princeton High School, and Campbell College with a Business Degree and a job offer at Arlington Hall, VA, working as a cryptographer, coding and decoding secret messages during World War II "The Code War". She was 19 and straight off the train from Princeton, NC. While in VA she met a soldier (her boss), which was to be her future husband. A year later they were married while waiting for his orders to be shipped overseas to the China, Burma area for 4 years. Clara was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Smithfield serving as an Elder during her many years as a faithful member. Her passion and love for music led her to sing in the church choir. She was also a member of the Smith Bryan Chapter of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution), in Smithfield where she served three years as Regent of the Chapter.Funeral services will be held Monday, September 2, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church at the corner of Church and Third Streets in Smithfield. The family will receive friends following the service in the church parlor. A committal service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. in the Princeton Cemetery.Surviving are her sons, Peter Garland Scouten and wife Colleen of Manassas Park, VA and Jeffrey Allen Scouten and wife Marsha of Chapel Hill; daughter, Nancy Scouten Dewhurst and husband Gordon of Hardy, VA; grandchildren, Matthew Scouten and wife Meagan of Silver Spring, MD, Christopher Scouten of Manassas Park, VA, Jennifer Scouten of Manassas Park, VA, Michelle Scouten Smith and husband Ben of Raleigh and Brice Scouten of New York City, NY; two great grandchildren, Audrey Caroline Smith of Raleigh and William MacAllister Scouten of Silver Spring, MD; sisters, Iola Narron of Raleigh, Faye Wilson of Wilmington and Marie Bailey of Raleigh and many nieces and nephews from NC and VA
