Born in Ann Arbor on December 28, 1925, to Carl and Wilhelmine (Kaercher) Gelenius, Cathryn attended Perry Elementary School, Tappan Junior High, and graduated from Ann Arbor High School in 1943. She later obtained a bachelor's degree (1963) and a master's degree (1965) from the University of Michigan.
She was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, the Academy of Certified Social Workers in the National Association of Social Workers, the Michigan Community Health Association, and served as the secretary, vice president, and president of the Michigan chapter of Hospital Social Work Directors. In November 1973, the Journal of the American Hospital Association published her paper Striking Back at Stroke, a scholarly article on family groups helping stroke patients.
In addition to a successful professional life, Cathryn enjoyed family life with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was the much-loved mother of John, Marilyn, and Anne (Steve Reuter), a caring stepmother to Lynn (Jim Keeton) and Larry (Teresa), the proud grandmother of Ethan, Matthew, Melissa, Tara, and Will, a doting great-grandmother to Cameron and Aubrey, a fond and loving aunt to numerous nieces and nephews, and she remained close throughout her life to her many Kaercher and Gelenius cousins.
She was also a sailor, world traveler, talented photographer, gardener, and lover of fine art. We will remember her as an astute, intelligent, warm, and compassionate woman who cared deeply for her family and for the often vulnerable people she served in her professional life.
Cathryn was preceded in death by her husband, William F. Dow, her sisters, Dorothy Fischer and Margaret Edel, and her brother, Howard Gelenius.
She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
