Services for Gresham Thaddeus Grantham Jr. of Lexington will be at 3 p.m. today at Acona Methodist Cemetery.

Mr. Grantham, 73, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, at his residence.

He was born on Oct. 5, 1934, to Gresham and Leona Madden Grantham on Senator Eastland's plantation in Doddsville. He resided in Itta Bena through his high school years. Mr. Grantham joined the Army Reserves in 1958, serving six months in Fort Jackson, S.C. Upon his return home, he became a member of the Greenwood Army Reserve until his discharge in 1962. His interest in cattle and horses drew him toward many occupations in the livestock business. After graduation Mr. Grantham was employed by Leslie Fletcher of Sunflower County as a cowboy. Later, he was employed by W.M. Duncon of Inverness, where he managed the cattle operation.

In 1960, he moved to Holmes County to establish a cattle operation for E.W. Hooker. In 1973, Mr. Grantham began a livestock pre-conditioning operation for Staple Cotton on his ranch at Acona. In 1978, he became a partner in Lexington Cattle Sales.

Due to an accident, Mr. Grantham became disabled in 1980.

Mr. Grantham was preceded in death by a son, Thad, and daughters, Carmen Marie and Melissa Grantham.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Gene Cox Grantham of Lexington; his son, Charles Wyche Grantham of Lexington; his brother, Leslie Grantham of Indiana; three sisters, Myra Leigh of Brandon, Mamie Brummett of Byram and Wanda Gardner of Alton, Mo.; and four grandchildren, Houston Grantham of Kosciusko, Rob Grantham of Kosciusko, Steele Grantham of Greenwood and Mary Margaret Grantham of Greenwood.

Scott Lenoir will officiate at the services. Pallbearers will be Rob Nichols, Nick Nichols, Roy Russell, Robert Wayne Carnathan, Wayne Guest and Brandon Hyde.

Southern Funeral Home in Lexington is in charge of arrangements.

Burial will be in Acona Methodist Cemetery in Acona.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Acona Cemetery Fund or Saint Mary's Episcopal Church.
