Hal Arvid Mix was born May 28, 1948 in Woodward, OK and passed away peacefully in a hospital near his home in Cherryvale, KS. Growing up in Buffalo, Oklahoma, Hal was an accomplished athlete playing both football and baseball for the home town as well as the Woodward Travelers Baseball team. Hal also excelled in academics, graduating from Buffalo High School in 1964 and later earning his degree in Pharmacy from SWOSU Weatherford, OK in 1969. Hal enjoyed a long and prosperous career in pharmacy, practicing entirely in Kansas. He worked for other pharmacists in Hutchinson, Pratt, and Tribune, and he owned and operated his own stores in Haviland and Dighton. Hal was married to Carlotta McClung in 1967, divorcing in 1981. From this union came two children, Eric and Misti. Hal met and began dating Marilyn Sue Simmons in 1988, and with this union Hal gained four step children, Richard, Gina, Cliff, and Christy. Having served the people of Dighton, KS for years managing the local grocery store, Marilyn was ready for a change and a challenge. She decided to go to Pharmacy school at Hal's alma mater, SWOSU, which Hal supported enthusiastically. He was a true introvert and couldn't wait for her to graduate so he could (semi)retire, get away from the public and enjoy the peace and solitude of cooking, cleaning, and gardening! They ran the store together for many years before retiring to a beautiful place in the country with two nice ponds, several acres of woods and plenty of space for both flower and vegetable gardening. In his youth Hal was an avid hunter and fisherman, but later in life he preferred pets over prey, enjoying the company of many dear cats and dogs who brought him great joy.

Hal was preceded in death by his father and mother Wayne and Helen Mix and his sister Michelene Coggins.

He was survived by his loving wife, Marilyn Sue Simmons Mix; brother-in-law and best friend, Arthur William Coggins; children and stepchildren Eric Wayne Mix, Misti Paulette Linville, Richard Wayne Chaney, Gina Lynn Beasley, Cliffton DeWayne Chaney, Cristina Gail Chaney; nieces Christina Louise Allen and Machelle Schomaker; grandchildren, great grandchildren, and many friends. As per Hal's wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial services but rather cremation and a celebratory family cookout by the pond where his ashes will be scattered. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the not-for-profit hospice:
