Justine Murch Laverty, 86, died peacefully on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, at the Gorham House.
She was born on March 2, 1927, in Portland, the daughter of Karl N. and Doris (Strout) Murch.
Justine grew up in Portland, graduating from Deering High School in the class of 1945. She then attended and graduated from Vermont Junior College. Following graduation, she went to work as a secretary at Cushman Baking Company, where she met her future husband, Edwin Laverty. In June, they celebrated 60 years of marriage.
Justine was a faithful member of School Street United Methodist Church (now the Cressey Road United Methodist Church) where she chaired many church suppers and was a member of the women's group WILACHLU. She also taught Sunday School at the church.
After Justine's children were grown, she worked for a few years at the Gorham High School hot lunch program.
Justine and Ed enjoyed more than 50 summers at their cottage on Panther Pond in Raymond and spent several winters in Ocala, Fla. Justine loved to travel. Her favorite trip, one that she talked about for years, was taken after college with a close friend. They traveled to Europe on the Queen Elizabeth where they toured Holland, Belgium, and France. In retirement, Justine and Ed were able to travel to many countries as well. The family joke was that they had never been west of the Mississippi River, with the exception of Alaska and Hawaii.
Justine was predeceased by her parents; and five siblings. She is survived by her beloved husband, Edwin J. Laverty of Gorham; daughter Judith and husband John Beaupain of Belgrade and their children, Brian of Waterville and Erin of Portland, daughter Karen and husband Scott Phair of Manchester and children, Josh (Gina) of Colorado and Jessica of North Carolina, and son Matthew of Monson. She is also survived by sister, Gloria Skenderian of New Hampshire and brother, Lawrence Murch of Raymond; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Justine's family extends its thanks and sincere appreciation to the caregivers at the Gorham House and to Sol Amor Hospice.
