Parents -- Edward and Ida Busse Schacht of Plymouth/Larksville.

Veteran of WW2. He served as Corporal in the U.S. Army 534th Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment and was part of the Japanese occupational forces.
Married Elizabeth Jones Williams on October 3 1946 in Middletown, N.Y.
In the late 50's, he and brother Edward discovered the remains of an Indian village , "The Schacht Site" along the Susquehanna river near Nanticoke ,Pa.. He and Ed along with groups from The University of Pa. and Temple University and members of the Frances Dorrance Chapter for PA archaeology excavated the site for many years. In 1962 , both he and Ed received the "Archy" award from the state of Pennsylvania for their work.
In the 1950's and 60's worked as a machinist for the Vulcan Iron Works and Kanaar Corporation. About 1965 he worked in electronic maintenance at the Tobyhanna Army Depot retiring in 1989.

Amateur radio operator WA3CPV. Charter member of the Murgas Amateur Radio Club.Robert F. Schacht Sr., 84, of Hillside Avenue, Plymouth, died Saturday afternoon at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born on Jan. 6, 1923, in Larksville, he was a son of the late Edward and Ida Busse Schacht. He graduated in 1941 from Plymouth High School. He served as a corporal in the U.S. Army 534th Engineer Boat and Shore regiment where he received the Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Award, Philippines Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with Bronze Star and WWII victory Medal, and was qualified as an expert marksman.

Upon returning home from the war he moved to Middletown, N.Y., and married Elizabeth Williams of Plymouth in 1946. After moving back to Plymouth he was employed as a machinist at the Vulcan Iron Works and the Hardie and Kanaar Corporation; and then began a career as an electronic maintenance engineer for the Tobyhanna Army Depot, retiring in 1988.

In the late 1950s, he and his brother Edward discovered the remains of an Indian village site along the Susquehanna River at Dundee and for the next few years they were joined by archaeologists from Temple University, Penn State University and the University of Pennsylvania in the excavation of what became known as the Schacht site. In 1965, he received the Archey Award from the state of Pennsylvania for his contributions in the field of archaeology. He was a founding member and past director of the Murgas Amateur Radio club and former member of the Frances Dorrance Chapter of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology. He became a licensed amateur radio operator in 1965 and also enjoyed his gardens.

In addition to his wife, Elizabeth, he was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Schacht Jr.

He is survived by a son, Robert Schacht Jr., and his wife, Donna; a granddaughter, Suzanne; a grandson, Robert III, of Plymouth; and a nephew, Ron Schacht, Iowa.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday from the William A. Reese Funeral Chapel, rear 56 Gaylord Ave., Plymouth, with the Rev. Anita J. Ambrose officiating. Interment will be in Fern Knoll Cemetery, Dallas. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
