ST. LOUIS CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE, MARCH TO JUNE 1866Farmer and resident of Boliver, Polk County, Missouri when he enlisted on January 11, 1862 for 1 year, age 17 into Co. D. 5th Missouri Infantry. He was wounded and captured at the Battle of Iuka, Mississippi in September, 1862, paroled and later exchanged back to his regiment. He then reenlisted "for the war" and transferred to Co. C. of this regiment. He was captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi in July 1863 and later exchanged back to his unit. He served with his brother, Pvt. James Conrad Acock (1842-1929) who was a nurse for William at Iuka and was captured with him. Upon his exchanged he transferred to the Trans-Mississippi area and served in a Missouri Cavalry regiment and survived the war.
