As a young woman, Helena felt a calling to serve the Lord and spent time studying to be a Catholic nun with a desire to be a missionary in other countries. She left the convent before taking her final vows, but never stopped loving or serving her Lord in other ways throughout her life.
Helena married Donald (Don) Luster on May 11, 1963 in the same church her parents had married in almost 40 years earlier. Helena and Don settled in the Chicago area and began expanding their family. They moved several times with Don's career opportunities, ultimately settling in Fort Worth, Texas.
Helena was widowed when Don passed away on January 23, 1980. She stayed in Fort Worth to finish raising her four children (then 15, 13, 11 and 5) and their many, many pets.
In 1985, Helena re-entered the workforce in the "soft" collections department at Dillard's. She saw this job as a way to minister and help people who were in difficult situations. She sometimes prayed with customers on the phone and even personally made small payments to keep accounts from going further delinquent, giving the customer a little more time to make arrangements and preserve their credit rating. She found a way to serve her Lord at Dillard's.
Helena retired in the late 1990's and spent her remaining life loving her Lord and loving her family. And she always found ways to serve her Lord.
Helena eventually moved to Denton, Texas to be near her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed her frequent trips to Kroger where she found another way to serve her Lord. Helena made friends with employees and other frequent, familiar customers - sharing her love for Jesus as she found great deals on canned goods. Lots and lots of canned goods!
In her later years, Helena lived in Corinth, Frisco, Lewisville and Flower Mound. She was always near her children and grandchildren and never stopped praying for them (or worrying about them.)
Helena was preceded in death by her husband Don, her parents Leo and Cora, her siblings and their spouses, Mitch & Ruth, Gertie, John & Sis, Gene & Virginia, Mary & Deb, Ann & Tom and Paul.
Helena is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Bernie (Marie), her four children and their spouses, Paul (Reila), Pam (David), Gene (Clair) and Dayna, her grandchildren Dalyn, Riley, Ben, Zoe, Darsey, Isabella, Leonardo, Sam (Abby), Joseph, and her great-grandchild, James. And many, many nieces, nephews and their extended families.
