Adelaide Carrell, Former Owner of WBBZ, Dead
A former owner and manager of radio station WBBZ, Mrs. Adelaide L Carrell. about 70 died in a Los Angeles hospital Sunday morning.
Born in New Adelaide, Australia, of theatrical family, she began at an early age training for the stage. She was 10 years in Australian theaters before coming to the United States.
During World War I along with her father. Mrs. Carrell entertained troops in the different camps in Sydney.
In America, she was engaged in a concert and theatrical career, stage, musical comedy and radio. She auditioned at the Metropolitan Opera House in 1926 and won a scholarship and studied Wagnerian roles.
While in radio work in Chicago, she met her future husband, Charles L. Carrell. who was a pioneer in radio. At his death in 1933, Mrs. Carrell took over as managing director of WBBZ, becoming one of the
first women to own and operate a radio station.
ln 1922, Carrell was granted licenses for 10 portable radio stations, largest number ever assigned to one person.
Radio station WBBZ, which was acquired by Carrell in Indianapolis. was brought to Ponca City in 1927. Under Mrs. Carrell's direction, the radio station grew and joined the Mutual Broadcasting System in 1937.
Mrs. Carrell sold WBBZ to Ponca City Publishing Company in January of 1949. She resided at 210 Virginia before moving to Tulsa in February 1950.
Mrs. Carrell is survived by a son, Charles Carrell Sr. of Los Angeles: also, three grandchildren of Ponca City, Charles Jr., Michael and Rachel 932 North Second.
Funeral services will be Tuesday morning in Los Angeles under the direction of the Utter McKinley Funeral Service.
