Shirley Helen Bash known as "Nana" to grand & great-grandchildren was born July 31, 1938 in Vancouver, Washington in 1935 her father Francis Hamilton Getchell (1895-1967), mother Eunice Jenny Steele (1911-1947) and Shirley's oldest brother Charles "Chuck" (1929-2004) moved from South Dakota to Vancouver, WA. Her father was a farmer and also sold milk to provide for the family.

Shirley is the youngest having four brothers, Chuck, Jack, Pat & Jim and one sister, Billie. Shirley grew up in the Battleground/Venersborg area and graduated from Battleground High School in 1956. Shirley married Lawrence Frank Patch in 1957. Lawrence died in 1964. Together they had three children: Debra, Michael and Corinne (1960-2002) her second marriage was to David Earl Bash, David died in 2003. She had three stepchildren; Sheryl, Donna, David and together they had two children: David Jr. (1965, died as an infant) and Steven (1967-2018). Shirley is blessed with eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Shirley worked at the Georgia Pacific Camas Mill in the converting department. In 1988 after having a brainstem stroke while driving to work she was forced to retire. The stroke left Shirley paralyzed from the chin down, but through rehab, perseverance, and lots of prayer, she regained the ability to talk, walk with a cane and she even drove with a special steering device. After regaining the use of her right hand, she enjoyed the hobby of oil painting with her sisters-in-law Sue, Barbara and Pat. Her oil paintings are treasured gifts to both family and friends. Other favorite pastimes Shirley enjoyed were watching sports, especially Portland trailblazer basketball, golf, listening to Elvis Presley music, traveling with Dave in their RV, fishing, playing cards and bingo.

For the past three years Shirley has resided at Toma's loving home, an adult family home where she received care. On May 3rd, hospice PeaceHealth was called in because of Shirley's declining health to assist in caring for her. Then on May 8th, Shirley went peacefully to be with her lord. Her body was cremated, and she will be interred with her beloved Dave at Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery in the Garden of Grace in Vancouver, Washington.
