Born to Leonard and Christine Thompson on 22 Mar 1935, Gerry spent her formative years in Nashville, Tennessee. Daddy's girl, she was also exceptionally close to her elder sister Sammie and their Aunt Hepsie. Gerry graduated from the Corinne L. Cohn School in 1952, where she served in the Student Congress and volunteered for the Red Cross. Gerry was also a member of the Dramatic Club, Theater Guild, and Glee Club. Voted Most Beautiful Girl by the senior class, Gerry was also their candidate for Miss Nashville High. From here, this intelligent and vibrant woman went out and eagerly pursued her dreams.
Gerry's parents migrated to Washington State, and she soon followed. William Young won her heart, and the couple married in Seattle in 1960. They had two children: Kurt and Connie. Devoted to her family, Gerry celebrated every occasion with a hearty meal and lively stories that effected laughter. Her daughter continues this tradition. Gerry enjoyed music and dancing and found solace in playing her spinet. She passed deep appreciation of song and dance to her son who also enjoys playing piano. Gerry cultivated a passion for family, love of learning, and a strong work ethic in her children and was proud of their accomplishments.
Gerry effectively combined her administrative and nurturing skills at the Duwamish Shipyard. For years she earned and held the esteem of managers and associates alike until other challenges and opportunities arose, and she retired. Most exciting? Greeting her grandbaby!
Gerry had longed for grandchildren. So much so that one year her children playfully set up a cardboard cutout of an infant to increase their holiday spirit! Gerry loved her granddaughter and step-grandchildren. In fact, she took on all her roles and challenges with passion. Gerry exuded quiet strength, benevolence, and open affection for those in her circle. She was sentimental, tender, and considerate, but it was her sheer stubbornness and determination that added decades to her life.
