Married to Leah Fanny McFarland on June 23, 1915 in St. Marys, Pleasants County, WV. They were married for 62 years.

John H. Smith and his father-in-law, Howard Porter McFarland, owned and operated the C. & M. Transportation Company and initiated the first bus service out of Marietta, Ohio in 1923.

The transportation business was sold to the Greyhound Corporation in 1938, and Mr. Smith was employed by Greyhound until his retirement about 1959.

He was a Greyhound Bus driver in the 1940's and 1950's in the Akron, Summit County, Ohio area which included Akron, Cuyahoga Falls, Silver Lake, Stow, Kent, and Ravenna, Ohio.

He moved from Marietta, Ohio to live at 749 Chalker Street in Akron, Ohio in the early 1940's.

About 1944 he bought the house in front of the Kent State University Airport at 3984 Kent Road, Stow, Summit County, Ohio and lived there for about 15 years. Following retirement, Leah and John moved to the Fort Lauderdale, Florida area about 1960.

John H. Smith, 83, a former resident of Marietta, died yesterday at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

He was the son of the late George and Mary Ward Schmidt of Lowell. He and the late Howard P. McFarland owned and operated the C & M Transportation Co. and initiated the first bus service out of Marietta in 1923. The business was sold to the Greyhound Corp. in 1938, and Mr. Smith was employed by Greyhound until his retirement.

He was a member of the Lauderdale Baptist Church and a 50-year member of American Union Lodge No. 1, F&AM. Mr. and Mrs. Smith had resided in Fort Lauderdale for 18 years.

He married Leah F. McFarland in 1915. They recently celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. His wife survives with two sons, Howard G. Smith of Palm Beach, Fla. and John H. Smith Jr. of Marietta, and a daughter, Mrs. J.C. Hightower of Columbus. There are three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Three brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the McClure-Schafer Funeral Home with the Rev. Donald Schuler officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery at Lowell. Friends may call at the funeral home from Friday tomorrow until the hour of the service. Masonic services will be held at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
