Cross, Wiley E. Jr, 92 of Mechanicsville, Virginia, passed away Monday, June 13, 2022 in Covenant Woods Healthcare.
He was predeceased by his parents, Wiley E. Cross, Sr and Eula Robertson Cross; as well as his wife of 63 years, Ellen Jean Dixon Cross. He is survived by five children, Hallie Leighton (Chuck), Alison Denler (John), Martha Swafford (David), Rob Cross (Elizabeth), Nat Cross (Lori), and son-in-law Dean Pollet; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He graduated from John Marshall High School (1947) where he served as Captain of the Cadet Corps and The University of Virginia School of Engineering (1951). He then served three years as a Commissioned Officer in the United States Navy. As a Professional Engineer he worked as a design engineer with Lockheed Aircraft in Marietta, GA, consultant engineer with Emmett Simmons in Richmond, and for 34 years with The Cardwell Machine Company, 20 years as chief engineer and four years as vice-president of development. He was awarded seven patents.
He lived in Glen Allen for 34 years, moved to Gloucester County for 17 years and for the past 12 years at Covenant Woods in Mechanicsville.
He was a member of Second Baptist Church, in Richmond, where he was married, Bethany United Methodist Church in Gloucester Point and Shady Grove United Methodist Church in Mechanicsville.
Wiley was a Christian and his main interest in life was his love for his wife and family with whom he was blessed. He enjoyed his engineering career and every chance he had to sail on the Chesapeake Bay.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 6, 2022, at the Covenant Woods Lodge in the Commons. A reception and time of celebration of his life will follow. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to remember him may make gifts in his memory to the Covenant Woods J. Edwin Givens Scholarship Fund, 7090 Covenant Woods Drive, Mechanicsville, VA 2311.
